Door County

Door County, Washington Island, Rock Island

October 9

Morning glow at the Jens Jensen curves, Highway 42 toward Gills Rock. Bucket-list fall-color frame. Cybertruck in one of them. I think it turned out.

Ferry to Washington Island. Parked against a wall, so I got out the rear passenger door. Breezy, sunny, about half an hour. Second time the truck has been on a ferry.

Mountain lookout tower. Views. A stand of canned goods. Pickles looked worth a stop on the way back.

Schoolhouse Beach. Limestone. I have the fine at $250 if you take a rock.

Rock Island today instead of tomorrow, so the trip home is not a half day late. Brunch at Jackson Harbor Soup before the noon ferry. Chili and the grilled club of the day. Too much. Half the sandwich saved.

Ferry to Rock Island at noon. Icelandic boathouse. Walked to Pottawatomie Lighthouse, the oldest in Wisconsin. A woman gave the tour.

U.S.L.H. Est. Library No. 317, inside the lighthouse. The tour had the keepers getting a box of books three times a year. No internet. The case was the library until the next boat.

Member of the Bitter's Club. Nelsen's Hall, Washington Island. The card is in my name. Date written on it is 10-9-26. A pint and the dark shot on the bar. The tap sign reads Bitters Club Member. A bitters stamp is on the card. The mark above the date reads Ch, then 26. I think those letters are the barkeep who poured the shot.

Then People's Park for sunset. A few people were there. They have been coming for years, taking pictures for years, and they talked about the fish and how fishing was 30–40 years ago. A pretty sunset. I hope I got a nice photograph out of it. You gotta have at least a sunset photograph on each trip, so it was good to have one in the books.
